Wedding Advice Couples Should Ignore
One of the most unexpected things couples deal with when wedding planning is the sheer amount of unsolicited advice. We get it, your friends and family are so excited that you’re tying the knot, and lots of people have opinions and advice for you about your wedding planning. Some of that advice is incredibly helpful, but, we’ll be honest, some of that advice should really just be ignored.
It’s All About the Bride
Not only are we not here for this antiquated thinking that completely overshadows the groom’s place in a wedding, but it also devalues same-sex weddings, which are just as special. A wedding is not about one person and one person only. A wedding is about a couple coming together to announce their love for one another to the world. It’s about two people joining their lives together and committing to each other.
You Must Have a Cake
A good wedding cake can be an incredible end to a perfect ceremony, but what if you or your partner don’t particularly like cake? We say pick something else. Maybe you like pie or donuts or milkshakes or cookies. Whatever dessert you and your partner enjoy can be your wedding dessert.
The Bride Should Wear White
It’s true that even now, a lot of brides choose to wear white. But white is by no means your only option. Wedding dresses come in every color now, and we love them all! Whether you’re planning a gothic and witchy wedding and want to wear black or you want to feel like a princess in pink, the perfect dress is out there!
Don’t Skip Any Traditions
Weddings have so many traditions! The receiving line, the garter toss, the bouquet toss, cutting the cake, the first dance, the father-daughter dance, a Saturday wedding, something new/old/borrowed/blue…we could go on forever with this list. If you love a particular tradition and want to incorporate it into your special day, then you absolutely should! But even if you want to incorporate one tradition, that does not mean you have to do them all. Yes, you can have a first dance and not have a father-daughter dance. Yes, you can wear something blue and forego the new and old items. Or, maybe you skip the traditions altogether and make some traditions of your own.
You Must Be Married By Someone Ordained
Yes, it’s a law in some states that you must be married by a person ordained to perform marriages. But in Colorado, an ordained officiant is not a legal requirement. In fact, you don’t have to have an officiant at all. Colorado recognizes self-solemnization in which the couple performs their own marriage ceremony.
Fun fact: Did you know that in Colorado, your dog can actually sign your marriage license as your witness? True story.
